Sue Lin, a fun loving and outgoing lady, first described her wedding dress as one that was “dreamy in tulle”. Working with her was a wonderful treat as her openness gave us the freedom to flex our creative muscles. She would send us pictures of herself in her favorite outfits which helped us a great deal in defining her unique personality and subtle tastes in clothes. Finally, after what can only be described as an invigorating flurry of creative fireworks, we arrived at a lovely pair of wedding gowns that suited her wonderfully.

Sue Lin glided down the aisle in her elegant white, multiple-tiered tulle wedding dress with a sheer lacy boat neckline. The delicately-pleated tulle added a dimension to the lace bodice. A lovely chapel-train completes the dress. The type of tulle was selected specifically to ensure that the fluffy wedding dress does not get in her way. Sue Lin loved the light-weight tulle and carried it effortlessly.

For her wedding reception, Sue Lin changed into her slim A-line chiffon evening dress with parted chiffon panels and a sweep train. The delicate lace adorned the sheer deep V-neckline and the sheer elbow length lace sleeves. The waist line was highlighted with a slim pink sash and Swarovski crystals.

We would to thank Sue Lin, for entrusting us with her wedding dresses and sharing with us all the joy and happiness of her special day! :D

Suet and Mike’s Wedding

Suet and Mike had their beautiful engagement photographs taken at Cheong Fatt Tze, Penang on a lovely sunny morning. Her vibrant red Cheongsam was a wonderful contrast with the  walls of the Blue Mansion.

The engagement photography featured one of Suet’s wedding dress, which was a custom designed, made-to-measure, fit-and-flare Cheongsam in full Japanese lace. The sheer low back of the dress was adorned with lace appliques and lined with matching lace buttons. Her hair accessory was a handmade flower from the same duchess satin of her Cheongsam. Pearls were sewn at the center of the petals to highlight the lovely piece.

Suet contacted us online as she made preparations for her wedding from abroad. Her wedding dress was made in advance and was ready for her first fitting session when she returned to Penang a few days before her wedding.

Wondering how we managed to create a made-to-measure dress without first meeting the bride? Chiffon & Lace has established a system exclusively for this purpose. The design ideas, sketches, material selection and dress delivery details were communicated via emails. Suet was guided through an easy-to-follow but comprehensive measurement guide. Typically, these measurements are done by a local tailor. However, due to its simplicity, Suet appointed Mike to take her full body measurements. The unique body measurement system enables us to make a dress that fits the bride’s body as close as possible. Rarely, minor alterations are required – but thanks to Mike! – Suet’s wedding Cheongsam was a perfect fit on the first fitting!

All that hard work was rewarded with a happy smile on Suet’s face when she put on the Cheongsam for the first time. We would like to thank Suet Kee for trusting us to make her wedding Cheongsam although we had not met in person until the first fitting. We would also like to thank Alex Tan for the beautiful pictures that showcase the dress.

Our Real Bride this week is the lithe Alice with her exquisite full lace dress.

Full Lace Wedding Dress

For her church ceremony, she wears a full-laced, one-shoulder, fit-and-flare wedding dress. Just look at the intricate floral details encapsulated in her French lace bridal gown!

The lace-work on the wedding dress took a lot of skill and experience, which Chiffon & Lace tailors and designer were happy to provide. It takes skill and dedication to work on such fragile and delicate material.

Her full-bodied train is the one of the most distinguishing feature of her wedding gown, owing its elaborately designed lace highlights, a testament to the skill of our team. Alice looked simply wonderful, with the abundance of lace that complimenting her slender physique. The lace grants her dress lightness, making it seem ephemeral.

A detachable lace flower is placed at the lower back, a natural highlight that complements the fluid elegance of the lace.

Her fetching Shantung silk Cheongsam is decorated with pink sheer lace on the neckline, sleeves and back. Matching French lace appliques decorate the collar, sweetheart neckline and the high slit (of course!).

Bridal Gown: Chiffon & Lace custom designed made-to-measure convertible wedding dress in cream white duchess satin

Hooi Chuan is a strong-spirited and joyful girl who enjoys the simple pleasures of living. Her wedding dress is perfectly suited for her small and intimate wedding ceremony. Rather than be flamboyant, the wedding dress is sleek and elegant: an appealing cream white duchess satin convertible dress. It features a figure-hugging cocktail length bandage dress, and a detachable hi-low bubble hem skirt. The strips of her bandage dress are curved at the bustier and narrowed around the waist, for a well-defined waistline. Alan was clearly in awe of her – rendered speechless by her sassy bandage dress at the pre-wedding party.

Later at the wedding reception, the dress was paired with a flared hi-low skirt for a little touch of under-stated style. The hi-low skirt is complemented with a small train that gives a svelte silhouette to the dress. We absolutely adore her bubble hem, ending at mid-thigh – perfect for showing off those slender legs of hers!

Enjoy the pictures :)

Meet Jasmine, our adorable Real Bride =D

Jasmine loves the outdoors, and she’s got that rich toned body of hers to prove it. Jasmine had her wedding at the Berjaya Langkawi Beach Resort – a perfect match for her and her ocean-loving husband, Matthias.

When she first came to Chiffon & Lace she vividly described her ideal wedding, along with plenty of pictures of the wedding dress designs that took her fancy. She has such a bubbly and outgoing personality, and it was a joy to work out the details with her. We were able to sketch her dream wedding gown – that special gown that would make people gawk, and go WOW!

Not even Matthias would see it until she walked down the wedding aisle – a special surprise for him (and of course everyone else too!). Her bridal gown is a body-hugging halter-neck consisting of carefully arranged french lace – a sexy combination of the revealing and the demure. A deep-V scalloped neckline and a splash of Swarovski crystals to the center of the bustline further complement the overall design. As part of the understated flamboyance of the dress, we made sure that the neckline, slit and hem all feature french lace. The translucent mid-section of the dress lends a certain exoticness to Jasmine – a sultry belly-dancer of the orient!

Finally, add a graceful 14-feet long-flowing train with a thigh-high slit and there you have it! An absolutely stunning bride!

The dress perfectly embodies Jasmine’s fun-loving and vivacious personality, as you can clearly see from the pictures. We are truly happy that we were part of her wedding day!

Our Real Bride this month is youthful Suan Bee :)

She put in a lot of time on her gym routine and it really shows – she was in great physical shape. That great body of hers and her sweet smile was our first impression of Suan Bee – and a design inspiration for us too! It would have to be a bridal gown that could flaunt those curves of hers and enhance her youthful look.

Chiffon & Lace designed Suan Bee’s wedding dress as fit-and-flare chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline and chiffon-pleated bustier. The neckline is adorned with a hand-made organza flower. The wedding gown is figure-hugging, her slim waistline accentuated by the pearls and hand-crafted French lace appliques attached to the bodice. A pair of chiffon drapes that flows down from the neckline to her upper back adds further volume to the dress. The entire look is completed with a chiffon train that overlays the flare bottom, beginning from where the chiffon drapes meet at the back of the dress. The soft chiffon train is specially designed for her grand entrance on her wedding day. It is also detachable for the sake of convenience.

Chiffon & Lace thanks Suan Bee for sharing her gorgeous engagement photos with us. You can see her wonderful dress in the pictures taken in Penang Loke Mansion and Hard Rock Hotel by Danny Chew.

The dress perfectly suits her and complements her curves from every angle – even from the back! We are proud to be a part of making her wedding day a very special and memorable one.

PoLyn was not your typical bride looking for a traditional white wedding dress.
When she came to us, she had a dream and a request: a colourful gown with the mixture of oriental and western features – And that’s exactly what she got!

..a colorful gown…

Purple was once a colour worth its weight in silver – reserved for emperors and members of the aristocracy in the ancient days.
With this as inspiration, we started the wedding gown design with a deep purple satin A-line gown with a corset closure, and topped it off with a plunging chiffon pleated V-neck.

..oriental and western features..

Next, we added gold (but of course!) cheongsam buttons on the shoulders and a wide colorful embroidery appliqués band around the waist line.
Then, a touch of gold along the sash, finishing off the bridal gown with a chiffon train, and cap sleeves.

Ke Wyn from Whizarts provided these beautiful pictures taken during her engagement wedding photography session that took place in Penang’s picturesque Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.
We hope you enjoy them!

Did you know that the Cheongsam (??) or Qipao (??) was once the day-to-day attire of both men and women in the Qing Dynasty? The earliest Cheongsam was long and steep with a profusion of embellishments that emphasised the beauty of the dress rather than the wearer. Women were forbidden from expressing their ideas and thoughts in the male-dominated patriarchy of those olden days. Similarly, the garment was also made long and loose to conceal the female body.

The fall of the last Chinese emperor and the rise of western influence has led to a renaissance of the venerable Cheongsam.  Young and educated women began wearing the ‘refined’ Cheongsam as a bold statement to their rising prominence in modern Chinese society. Made popular by Shanghai celebrities in the 20’s, the modern Cheongsam has since gained recognition in the international arena of high fashion. The Shanghai-style Cheongsam features a form-fitting dress with high collar and slits, and a sleek cut that accentuates the slender curves of Chinese women. Critics say the Cheongsam is elegant and gentle, mirroring the temperament of Chinese women – this is certainly something that this writer can quite happily agree with!

The convergence of fashion from the East and West has led to widespread acceptance of the Cheongsam in modern society. The Cheongsam is a highly visible aspect of Chinese weddings, which still feature many aspects of traditional culture. In addition to a western-style white wedding dress, many Chinese brides opt for a Cheongsam during the tea ceremony and the traditional ying bin (??) which is the welcoming of guests at the wedding reception. Wedding day Cheongsams  are bright and delightful, adorned with intricate embellishments that symbolise happiness and prosperity.

The pictures below feature Chiffon & Lace brides in their flattering, custom designed, made-to-measure Cheongsam.

Wedding Dress lime green Cheongsam with sheer lace back

An ankle length, sleeveless, bright golden green Shantung silk Cheongsam with gold trimming and sheer, lacy, low back. The delicate lace appliques were carefully arranged to emphasise the arch of the back. High slits on both sides of the dress subtlety show off the bride’s slender legs and transforms her into a classical oriental beauty.

Wedding Dress, two tones short Cheongsam

Wedding Dress Cheongsam embroidery

A halter top, bare back, two-tone Shantung silk Cheongsam with hand-sewn flower embroidery appliques. The mix and match of two contrasting colors (pearl white and dark turquoise), visually emphasises the curve of the bride. The pink trim complements the mixture of white, pink and turquoise flower appliques, which adds a delicate touch to this otherwise short and sassy Cheongsam. The best part about a short Cheongsam is its lightness – casual enough to be worn during less formal occasions such as a night in town.

An updo or half-updo hairstyle goes well with the high-collar of the Cheongsam. The accessories are usually kept to a minimum to complement the elaborate embellishments on the Cheongsam. In fact, a matching pair high-heels is the most important piece of accessory to go with a Cheongsam. Besides enhancing the wearer’s slender look, the shorter length of the Cheongsam (above the ankles) draws attention to her heels. It is important to be meticulous, right down to the smallest details – even the bride’s  feet :)

The classy oriental dress will certainly be one of the many highlights on your wedding day!

Ke Wynn, is a simple family guy with many passions.  This entrepreneur and professional photographer has a resume that includes 6 years of experience in photographing weddings and portraits. He has also started 4 companies including Whizarts Wedding Photography (www.whizarts.com), One Tree Wedding Stationary (www.onetree.com.my) Say Cheese! photo booth (www.say-cheese.com.my), and Milestone Pictures (www.milestonepictures.com.my).

C&L: How would you describe your style of photography and where do you draw your inspiration from?

Ke Wynn: Timeless, real and relaxed would best describe my style. I draw my inspiration from the couple themselves. If they’re fun and outgoing, it would inspire me to shoot more ‘fun’ shots whereas if the couple is more composed and ‘serious’, it will inspire me to shoot something with a touch of glam in it.

C&L: Is there a place where you would love to shoot a wedding but haven’t yet?

Ke Wynn: Penang itself is a beauty but if I had to shoot outside from the island it would be Africa. LOL!

C&L: What can a bride do to prepare for their photo shoot?

Ke Wynn: Most important thing one must do prior and during their shoot is to relax and not worry about their photography session. I can tell though the lens if the bride or groom is nervous. Oh yea, bring plenty of water and some snacks too.

C&L: Any advice for the couple on how to select a wedding photographer who best suits them?

Ke Wynn: The usual tips would be, choose someone who you are comfortable with, with the style you like. I would also like to add, choose someone who is not over booked or over worked. Make sure he or she can focus on what they are paid for (which is to shoot and to work on your wedding photos) and not get distracted with too many other commitments.

Thank you Ke Wynn, for a fascinating interview and for sharing your beautiful images. To find out more about Ke Wynn and his work, visit www.whizarts.com
